Symantec, Google Spotlight SAAS Security

Symantec and Google didn’t get Oracle CEO Larry Ellison’s memo that SAAS and cloud computing are overhyped. Symantec bought security SAAS provider MessageLabs for a bundle while Google simplified pricing for its security SAAS. Web services security for enterprise applications and messaging and collaboration tools is alive and well.

Oracle CEO Larry Ellison roiled the waves recently when he mocked Web-based computing, but software as a service is doing just fine, as new moves from Google and Symantec testify.

Symantec moved to buy MessageLabs on Oct. 8 for $695 million in the largest security SAAS deal to date, dwarfing Google’s $625 million purchase of Postini in 2007. Google Oct. 8 meanwhile tweaked the pricing model for its Postini-based MessageLabs SAAS security software and agreed to archive e-mail for up to 10 years.

The 451 Group Analyst Paul Roberts said SAAS security was the main thrust of Symantec’s bid because MessageLabs has one of the most mature platforms for provisioning, delivering and managing messaging and SAAS security services.

Security Hole in Adobe Flash Allows Free Amazon Movie Downloads

A security hole in Adobe Flash video server software, used to distribute movies and TV shows over the Internet, is giving users free access to record and copy from Amazon.com’s video streaming service. The Adobe Flash video server software doesn’t encrypt online content, but only orders sent to a video player such as start and stop play. To boost download speeds, Adobe dropped a stringent security feature that protects the connection between the Adobe software and its players. The Adobe Flash video servers are connected to Adobe’s Flash video players installed in nearly all of the world’s Web-connected PC computers.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A security hole in Adobe Systems Inc software, used to distribute movies and TV shows over the Internet, is giving users free access to record and copy from Amazon.com Inc’s video streaming service.

The problem exposes online video content to the rampant piracy that plagued the music industry during the Napster era and is undermining efforts by retailers, movie studios and television networks to cash in on a huge Web audience.

"It’s a fundamental flaw in the Adobe design. This was designed stupidly," said Bruce Schneier, a security expert who is also the chief security technology officer at British Telecom.

PKS berkoalisi dengan PDI-P, salah satu solusi umat!

Tersiarnya kabar bahwa PKS dapat berkoalisi dengan siapa saja dalam pemilu 2009 nanti, adalah sebuah politik yang sangat tepat. Sistem politik yang berjalan dalam ranah dakwah di PKS akhirnya benar-benar mengembang. Sudah saatnya kebaikan itu bukan berada di PKS saja, tetapi disemua partai. Termasuk PDI-P. Kebaikan dalam menerima dakwah Islam yang diusung dalam koalisi Islam dan Sekuler adalah langkah nyata terbukti keunggulan sebuah partai tersebut. jika memang dapat dilakukan.

Bergaining position dalam langkah PKS dari setiap pernyataan petinggi-petinggi PKS merupakan hal yang patut kita cermati. Bagaimana tidak, sebuah partai yang massanya lebih kecil ini, saat menyatakan statement maka petinggi-petinggi partai besar pun bereaksi. < ?xml:namespace prefix = st1 />Ada ketidaknyamanan terlihat pada petinggi-petinggi partai besar. Berarti, kekuatan PKS sudah sangat diperhitungkan oleh petingg-petinggi partai besar.

Mencuatnya kabar bahwa PKS dapat berkoalisi dengan siapa saja, merupakan langkah besar yang dapat membawa partai ini kegerbang kemenangan. Kemenangan dakwah Islam dalam parlemen yang diusung oleh PKS ini, adalah simbol kepluralisan yang sangat compatible dalam bermanuver politik. Tidaklah mungkin, jika manuver partai politik yang hanya stagnan berada pada titik tertentu saja, akan mendulang kesuksesan. Ini merupakan modal awal bagi PKS, untuk menjadi partai besar yang kemungkinan akan menguasai Indonesia ini.

Dengan berkoalisi dengan partai-partai lain, termasuk dengan partai sekuler sekalipun. PKS harus mampu secermat mungkin melihat peluang untuk dijadikan sasaran tembak dalam kemenangan yang ingin diraihnya. Mengingat Islam adalah agama yang mempunyai karakteristik yang begitu sempurna, maka sudah seharusnyalah PKS harus menyempurnkan dakwah itu kedalam koalisi.

How Online Fraudsters Are Using SaaS in Their Networks

It’s now possible for anybody to purchase online criminal services on a monthly fee basis — if you know where to go. As the bad guys get more sophisticated, false bank Web sites are becoming harder to identify from legitimate ones. Even more caution is now needed to stop these frauds, a noted online security expert says.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Apparently, there are some real career paths available in the online fraud business. One can become an identity harvester, a software developer who builds botnets, a delivery middleman, a salesperson — the list is long and resembles legitimate businesses in many ways.

At an analysts’ briefing Sept. 25 at EMC’s Silicon Valley offices, RSA Security head of new technologies Uri Rivner told attendees that the Internet fraud business has grown so large and enmeshed in legitimate online activities that it is becoming increasingly difficult to tell who’s good and who’s bad.

Anis: Koalisi dengan PDIP Tetap Terbuka

JAKARTA - Banyak yang meragukan bahwa PDIP-PKS dapat mencapai kompromi untuk koalisi karena perbedaan ideologinya sangat jauh. Tetapi, menghadapi Pilpres 2009, wacana koalisi itu terus bergulir.

Sekjen PKS Anis Matta, misalnya, mengatakan bahwa saat ini tidak tepat lagi mendikotomikan PDIP-PKS secara ekstrem. ’’ PDIP-PKS itu tidak layaknya minyak dan air. Jadi, peluang koalisi tetap terbuka,’’ katanya di Jakarta kemarin (21/9).

Saat ini, jelas Anis, PDIP dan PKS sama-sama bergerak ke tangah. Kekuatan-kekuatan politik di Indonesia kini memiliki kecenderungan dan kesadaran untuk meninggalkan era politik aliran pada i masa lalu yang penuh dengan pergesekan dan ketegangan.

Dia mencontohkan, langkah PDIP yang membentuk Baitul Muslimin, sayap partai yang bernapaskan Islam. Sementara itu, PKS juga menggelar peringatan seratus tahun kebangkitan nasional dan memilih Bali sebagai tempat pelaksanaan Mukernas I PKS -1 Februari lalu.

’’Beberapa iklan PKS juga mengutip pidato-pidato Soekarno,’’ beber ketua tim Pemenangan Pemilu Nasional PKS itu. Dia menegaskan, PKS akan ikut mendorong lahirnya era Indonesia baru yang tidak tersekat-sekat ke dalam politik aliran.

’’Intinya, Islam dan nasionalis tidak perlu dipisahkan dan dipertentangkan. Sampai di sini, paradigma kami sama dengan PDIP,’’ katanya. Dia menyampaikan, sebagai bagian yang terpisahkan dari suatu bangsa besar, PKS harus menunjukkan kesiapan untuk berkerja sama dengan berbagai komponen bangsa.

ITS Optimistis Semburan Lumpur Bisa Dihentikan

Surabaya- Kordinator Tim ITS untuk penanganan lumpur Sidoarjo, Ir Djaja Laksana, Jumat, menyatakan tetap optimis bahwa semburan lumpur Lapindo Brantas di Porong, Sidoarjo, Jawa Timur, bisa dihentikan dengan sistem bendungan Bernoulli.

Hal itu diungkapkan Djaja menanggapi pernyataan Ketua Dewan Pengarah BPLS Djoko Kirmanto bahwa pemerintah “menyerah” dan menganggap semburan lumpur tak bisa dihentikan dan penanganan sekarang ini difokuskan pada masalah sosial dan pembangunan infrastruktur.

“Saya kecewa kenapa pemerintah menyatakan menyerah tanpa melakukan konfirmasi dengan para pakar. Kami tidak pernah diajak ngomong tiba-tiba menyerah,” kata Djaja dengan nada tinggi.

Hal senada juga ditegaskan Ketua LPPM ITS, I Nyoman Sutantra. Menurut dia, berdasarkan teori Bernoulli, pihaknya optimis aplikasi bendungan Bernoulli mampu menghentikan semburan lumpur Lapindo tersebut.

“Kami tegaskan bahwa tim ITS tidak menyerah untuk menghentikan semburan lumpur Sidoarjo. Kami akan melakukan berbagai upaya agar pemerintah mau mencoba teknik ini,” katanya.

Kekecewaan senada diungkapkan Aryo Widjanarko, anggota Tim Pemantau Penanggulangan Lumpur Sidoarjo (TPPLS) DPR RI.

Anggota DPR RI dari fraksi PKB ini menganggap, seharusnya pemerintah konsisten dengan keppres yang menyatakan bahwa penghentian semburan lumpur merupakan domain tanggung jawab Lapindo. Dengan demikian, pemerintah dan lapindo harus terus mencari jalan untuk menghentikan semburan tersebut.

“Yang perlu dipertanyakan adalah goodwill pemerintah dalam menghentikan semburan lumpur. Kami dari TPPLS DPR RI sudah berkali-kali bertanya, namun tak pernah mendapat jawaban yang memuaskan,” katanya.(*)

From Antivirus to Web Security, MessageLabs Eyes Rivals in SaaS Security Race

MessageLabs is looking challenge its SaaS security rivals with plans for new services and integrated policy enforcement across its messaging and Web security offerings. MessageLabs competes in a crowded SaaS space with the likes of Google, Microsoft and ScanSafe, as well as against traditional security vendors like Symantec.

The quickening adoption of software-as-a-service must be validating for a company like MessageLabs, which has had a software-as-a-service (SaaS) business model since its inception in 1999.

But in a crowded space a company is only as good as its ability to differentiate itself, and to that end MessageLabs plans to expand its offerings and unify policy enforcement across its messaging and Web security services as it looks to keep Google, Microsoft and others at bay.

“The big vision for us…is that single policy,” said Jos White, chief marketing officer for MessageLabs. “So you say, ‘I want to encrypt information going to the executive team. I don’t want to receive MP3 files. I want to archive information coming from the CEO.’ (Those policies are) cascaded down across every different type of way that you use the Internet.”

White, who co-founded the company with his brother, Ben, called this the company’s major objective over the next one to two years and a key part of its plan to differentiate itself in a crowded market. The U.K.-based company cleared $145 million in revenue during its last fiscal year, but faces competition from companies ranging from Google to ScanSafe to Microsoft. Then, there are the traditional anti-malware vendors like Symantec and McAfee, as well as a growing number of startups such as Purewire.

Microsoft Patch Tuesday Plugs Critical Security Holes

Microsoft issues four critical security bulletins for September’s Patch Tuesday. The largest of the four addresses vulnerabilities in Microsoft Windows GDI+ that affect multiple Microsoft products, including Windows XP, Vista, Windows Server 2003 and Windows Server 2008.

Microsoft released four "critical" security bulletins for September’s Patch Tuesday, including a massive update for Microsoft Windows GDI+ that affects multiple products.

All four bulletins address vulnerabilities that permit hackers to remotely execute code. Of the four, the GDI+ bulletin is the largest. GDI+ is a graphics device interface that provides two-dimensional vector graphics, imaging and typography to applications and programmers. It is also the source of five vulnerabilities in this month’s update.

According to Microsoft, the flaws can be exploited if a victim either views a malicious image file using affected software or browses a Web site that contains the content. The vulnerabilities affect multiple products, including all supported editions of Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008, as well as all supported editions of SQL Server 2005. A complete list is available in the advisory.

"The graphics engine is part of all operating systems, and is also included with Microsoft Office and Microsoft SQL Server products, among others," said Eric Schultze, CTO of Shavlik Technologies. "You may need to install multiple patches on your system to address this issue, where each patch updates a different component on your computer."
